| HYPNOTHERAPY
is the application of hypnosis as a form of therapy;
hypnotherapy practitioners believe that when a client enters, or believes
they have entered, a state of trance they are more receptive to suggestion
and other therapy.
Hypnotherapy can be used to address problems like obesity, smoking, pain, anxiety, stress, amnesia, phobias, performance problems - and many others. An important figure in the development of hypnotherapy was Milton Erickson, an American psychiatrist specialising in medical hypnosis. He was founding president of the American Society for Clinical Hypnosis and a fellow of several psychological associations. Hypnosis, as part of a therapeutic session, can help in many ways: medical practitioners even use hypnosis for anaesthesia and pain control. The hypnotic or trance state is a natural condition where your body and mind are deeply relaxed, similar to the state we are all in prior to waking up. Hypnotherapy uses the 'trance' state to bypass the waking, conscious, critical state of mind and suggest more positive patterns of behaviour and thought to the subconscious. In a hypnotherapy session you are guided towards a goal you desire, such as stopping smoking or performing better as a public speaker. The hypnotherapist does not control you and you will not follow any suggestion that is repugnant or offensive to you as an individual. The ideal hypnotherapy session is a relaxed and co-operative affair. Hypnotherapy cannot 'cure' issues that are strictly medical but it can work alongside medical cures by helping with issues like motivation to maintain treatment, lower anxiety and stress levels or reduce the perception of pain. Hypnotherapy can be an effective method to improve confidence, concentration, recall, motivation, achievement, focus and manage stress or anger. Hypnosis can help overcome addictions, bad habits, eating disorders, insomnia, fears, phobias, negative thinking, emotional and behaviour patterns. It can also release the full potential of the individual in the workplace, improve sports performance, and improve creative and artistic expression. Hypnotherapy may also be used during Psychotherapy as a technique to uncover the roots of a problem and then alleviate it. Many people's experience of hypnosis is based on how it is portrayed in films, on TV or on the stage; by turns sinister and played for laughs. But in reality it is an effective mental tool that enables people to take control of things that may have seemed beyond their control in the past. You can not be controlled by someone using hypnosis but you do become receptive to positive suggestions that are acceptable to you. The goal of hypnotherapy is not for the client to be 'controlled' by hypnosis but for the client to be empowered - hypnosis is just a convenient tool. Your life should be what you want it to be. It is your life. Take control and get what you desire out of it. |
